The Inland Waterways Association National Campaign Rally 2008 In spite of the weather, the season of events held on the Montgomery Canal with the main aim of promoting the canal and it’s ongoing restoration, were well supported. In addition to local interest, visitors travelled great distances (some from as far away as New Zealand) to join in the festivities. At Welshpool, over the weekend of the 30th/31st August, The Montgomery Canal Festival (opened by Lembit Opik. MP for Montgomery), and the Trail Boat Rally produced a steady stream of visitors and participants some of which can be seen in the photo below. At Maesbury, Canal Central, the Boaters Rally and Market, was held over the weekend of the 6th/7th September. This event was opened on the Saturday by Heledd Fychan of the TV Programme “Waterworld”. Seen below:- “SATURN” and Sue Cawson’s “THEA” are seen here moored at the towpath entrance to Canal Central. Sue is chair of the Shropshire Union Fly-boat Restoration Society and Thea was Saturn’s tug to the event.
